Generate 10 Character Password

A 10-character password with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols provides roughly 65 bits of entropy, which is sufficient for most everyday accounts like shopping sites and news subscriptions. For high-value targets like email or banking, consider stepping up to 14 or 16 characters.

Each additional character multiplies the number of possible combinations by the size of the character set. Going from 8 to 10 characters with a 95-character set increases possibilities by about 9,000 times. In practical terms, a password that takes minutes to crack at 8 characters could take weeks or months at 10 characters.

Most people can memorize a single 10-character random password with a few days of practice by typing it repeatedly. However, you should not try to memorize passwords for every account. Use a password manager for most accounts and only memorize your master password and perhaps your email password.

A 10-character password works well for medium-security accounts such as online shopping, streaming services, and social forums. Avoid using only 10 characters for your primary email, financial services, or any account that could be used to reset other passwords. Those deserve 16 or more characters.
