Generate 16 Character Password

At 16 characters with all character types, a password achieves roughly 105 bits of entropy. This far exceeds the 80-bit threshold that cryptographers consider computationally infeasible to brute-force. It also provides a generous buffer against future advances in computing power, including early quantum computing capabilities.

Current quantum computing research suggests that Grover's algorithm could effectively halve the bit strength of a password. A 16-character password with 105 bits of entropy would still retain roughly 52 effective bits under quantum attack, which remains strong. For truly quantum-resistant security, consider 24 or more characters.

16 characters is an excellent minimum for a master password. Since this single password guards all your other credentials, it deserves maximum strength. Make sure it is truly random and not based on personal information. Some experts recommend going up to 20 characters for master passwords as an extra precaution.

Very few modern services reject 16-character passwords. Some legacy banking systems or older enterprise applications may truncate passwords silently at 12 or 14 characters, which is a serious security concern. Test by creating a password and then logging in with only the first portion to verify the full length is being used.
