About FTP Password Passwords

FTP passwords protect file transfer access to your servers. Since FTP credentials can provide full file-system access, they must be strong. Always prefer SFTP over plain FTP for encrypted transfers.

Security Tip

Use SFTP instead of FTP whenever possible. Rotate FTP passwords frequently and restrict access by IP address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is plain FTP considered insecure even with a strong password?
Plain FTP transmits your username and password in cleartext across the network. Anyone monitoring the connection (on the same WiFi, at the ISP, or through a compromised router) can see your credentials in plain text. A strong password does not help if it is transmitted unencrypted. Always use SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) or FTPS (FTP over TLS) instead.
What is the difference between SFTP and FTPS and which should I use?
SFTP runs over SSH (port 22) and encrypts everything in a single connection. FTPS adds TLS encryption to the traditional FTP protocol (port 21/990) and requires additional ports for data channels. SFTP is generally preferred because it uses a single port (simpler for firewalls), does not require separate certificate management, and is supported by all modern hosting providers.
Should I restrict FTP access to specific IP addresses?
Yes, whenever possible. Restricting FTP/SFTP access to known IP addresses through your firewall or the FTP server's configuration is one of the most effective security measures. Even if credentials are compromised, the attacker cannot connect from an unauthorized IP. Combine IP restrictions with a strong password and 2FA for maximum protection.
How do I manage FTP passwords for a team of developers and designers?
Create individual FTP accounts for each team member rather than sharing a single credential. This provides accountability through logs and allows you to revoke access for one person without affecting others. Use a shared password vault (1Password Teams, Bitwarden Organizations) for credential distribution. Disable accounts immediately when team members leave.
