About Letters Only Passwords

A letters-only password uses uppercase and lowercase characters without numbers or symbols. This is useful for systems that restrict password character types.

Security Tip

Letters-only passwords should be longer (16+) to compensate for the smaller character set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I choose a letters-only password over one with numbers and symbols?
Some legacy systems, embedded devices, and certain international keyboard layouts make it difficult to enter numbers or symbols reliably. A letters-only password ensures compatibility across different input methods and locales. It is also easier to dictate over the phone when sharing credentials is necessary.
How many characters do I need in a letters-only password for strong security?
With 52 possible characters (26 uppercase + 26 lowercase), each character provides about 5.7 bits of entropy. To reach the 78-bit threshold that experts recommend, you need at least 14 characters. To match a 12-character mixed-type password, aim for 16 or more letters.
Are letters-only passwords more vulnerable to dictionary attacks?
Only if they contain recognizable words. A randomly generated letters-only password like 'QmTxBvNpKrWjHfLs' is not vulnerable to dictionary attacks because it does not contain any words. The risk comes from human-chosen passwords that use real words, not from the character set itself.
Can I use a letters-only password for WiFi networks?
Yes. WPA2 and WPA3 accept any printable ASCII characters, including letters-only passwords. Since WiFi passwords are entered infrequently and can be shared via QR codes, a 20-character random letters-only password provides excellent network security with broad device compatibility.
