About 6 Character Passwords

A 6-character password offers limited protection. While better than 4 characters, modern brute-force attacks can crack 6-character passwords relatively quickly. Use for low-security needs only.

Security Tip

6-character passwords are vulnerable to brute-force attacks. Use 12+ characters for important accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some websites still allow 6-character passwords?
Many older platforms set their minimum password length years ago when computing power was lower. They have not updated their policies to reflect modern threats. Just because a site allows 6 characters does not mean it is secure. Always exceed the minimum requirement and aim for at least 12 characters.
How many possible combinations does a 6-character password have?
A 6-character password using uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers has about 2.2 billion possible combinations. While that sounds large, a modern GPU can test billions of hashes per second, meaning it can be cracked in minutes to hours depending on the hashing algorithm used.
Is a 6-character password safe for a forum or low-priority account?
For a throwaway forum account that holds no personal data and is not linked to your email, a 6-character password may be acceptable. However, if you reuse that password anywhere else, a breach on that forum could expose your other accounts. It is always safer to use unique, longer passwords managed by a password manager.
What is the best way to strengthen a 6-character password without making it longer?
You cannot truly compensate for short length. Adding symbols and mixed case helps marginally, but a 6-character password with all character types still only has about 36 bits of entropy. The most effective improvement is simply increasing the length. Even adding two more characters roughly doubles the crack time many times over.
