Reputable VPN providers hash your password using strong algorithms and do not store it in plaintext. However, not all providers follow best practices. Choose a VPN with a proven no-logs policy and independent security audits. Regardless of the provider's practices, using a unique random password ensures that a breach at one service does not affect your other accounts.

These are often different credentials. Your VPN account password logs you into the provider's website to manage your subscription. Your VPN connection credentials (sometimes a separate username and password or certificate) authenticate the actual encrypted tunnel. Generate unique passwords for each and store both in your password manager.

Your VPN password authenticates you to the VPN server, establishing an encrypted tunnel. All your internet traffic then flows through this tunnel, invisible to anyone on the public WiFi network. If your VPN password is weak or compromised, an attacker could hijack your VPN session or impersonate the server, exposing the traffic you thought was protected.

Your IT department manages the corporate VPN infrastructure and can reset your credentials, but they typically cannot see your actual password if it is properly hashed. However, they can monitor all traffic flowing through the corporate VPN. For personal browsing privacy, use a separate personal VPN service with its own unique credentials on your personal devices.
